…because I can still go back to Smothered Hope, when I was young, I sang “Withered rope you hang what’s empty can’t remain to put it simply in time cry the hollow words to sing with false disguise” and I would always think to myself “Am I too young to sing this? Is this a song I’d be singing when I’m older?” And now when I sing this song, it still resonates with me in the same way as when I was young and I thought I was writing a song that was too old for me at that time.

Regen Magazine has posted a brand new, in-depth interview with Ogre covering everything from the social issues surrounding Weapon to record label woes. Here’s a clip about the revamped Solvent:::

We had the idea of going back and rerecording all of Remission. We may totally look at something like that in the future, but we thought that it might be a little cheesy, so we thought we’d experiment with one of the songs. Solvent was the choice just because it was never fully realized when we did it back in 1983. I can’t speak for cEvin, and musically, it’s pretty good actually. From my perspective and thinking about my earlier singing, because I wasn’t a great singer back then, I didn’t have the range I do now, I didn’t think I did the song justice. I’m sure the vulnerability and the fragility in the voice is what gives it its magic too. We were experimenting with the idea of redoing songs, and whatever the feedback from how people feel about that will determine how to move forward with that.

I recently came to this weird gestalt in my mind that everything we do has the potential to either harm or cause good. This is a choice we all make with every action. But I view the human being primarily as a weapon, and a lot of the things that weâve created have had disastrous effects on us as a species. Guns are a tiny element of a much larger iceberg thatâs latticed throughout history.

OGRE CON APPEARANCES IN LA AND CHARLOTTE:

Ogre will be making a couple of convention appearances in the coming weeks. First up is Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, NC this weekend, March 22nd thru 24th. Next up is LA’s Days of the Dead. Ogre will be appearing there on Saturday April 6th (though the con itself runs all weekend). In addition to signing Repo! and Devil’s Carnival merchandise, Ogre will also have some ohGr merchandise and some vintage Skinny Puppy photos available. This stunning new album stands as a commentary on that which it is named after, the Weapon, or more specifically, to the concurrent glorification of the gun culture and simultaneous horror at the devastation the gun can cause. Given this view, the pop undertones of the albums opening wornin’ and the compelling counterpoint of the vocals and lyrics seem to reflect our mass media homogenization of an instrument of death into an entertainment centerpiece. illisiT could then be focusing on the authoritarian control applied to us under the guise of protecting us from the criminal element. Though possibly it is from the view of the average citizen, arming themselves against the threat of each other. The more it is analyzed, the more it could be pondered on varying levels. Perhaps the classic Skinny Puppy sounds evident in the song solvent are a nod to not only the past, but to a bleak Orwellian future, cycle of the weapon leads only to power in the hands of those who have no fear of using it. Are we facing a 1984 dystopia filtered through a Kafkaesque lens? A world where the illusion of power given to the private citizen afforded ownership of a weapon distracts them from the Big Brother drones that watch overhead? Parallels could certainly be drawn from our own society to a track like tsudanama, where the ever building menace of the mechanized rhythms crashes over the listener in waves as the vocals at times seem to take the tone of the voice of protest, standing against the inevitable tide of the dystopian path of progress. Then does plasiCage implore the listener to take up the fight against a gun worship culture and the spiraling towards oligarchy? Or are the mournful tones terminal a funeral dirge for our society? Could the weapon be the gun, or the one who wields it? Is it in creating an arms race among the populace, or does it lie in the resulting authoritarian control given to those who are charged with protecting us from ourselves? Is it the power to profit from the cycle? SKINNY PUPPY'S MEAT FLAVOUR TURNS 30:

It’s hard to believe but this month has marked the 30th anniversary of the recording of what would be the first song given the Skinny Puppy name: Meat Flavoured Factor a.k.a. Meat Flavour. Produced in December 1982, it was released in an edited version on Puppy’s first, homemade release, Back and Forth series 1 in early 1984, which was reissued as Back and Forth series 2 in 1992. 2003 saw release of a much longer version, Meat Flavoured Factor, on Back and Forth 6. I figured we’d celebrate this occasion by taking a look back at the making of the track with cEvin Key. Here’s what he has to say about this piece of history:::

This song was initially made sometime in late 1982 with Joe Vizvary after a rehearsal for Images in Vogue one night. The jam was kind of basic and I recorded it to cassette and took it home. That month, I think, someone had just purchased a Lexicon PCM41 Digital delay and for me I kind of saw this box as a spaceship. I had no idea at the time what it was doing and this lead to me wanting to see what it would do to sound. I borrowed Don Gordon’s delay and took it home and I had purchased a 4 track cassette recorder. I used the basic track from the jam and fed it through the PCM41 and recorded the fx on its own track. This was how the song was created. The equipment used at the time was a DMX drum machine with a Pro One synth and Joe was jamming on his Prophet 5 and Yamaha strings. Then all fed through the PCM41. The voice added later is John Hurt from a film I can’t recall. The original length of the jam was quite long and most of it appears on Back and Forth 6 version. The piece used was much smaller and pitched again on the Back and Forth cassette. I called it Skinny Puppy after a promise to make a band of the name one day At the time I had then thought about a band which I made membership cards for and I gave one to Joe and one to Dale Plevin who was our fretless bass guitar player in the beginning on Glass houses and other tracks. It reads Skinny Puppy official member. I did record some other songs after this track. 2 tapes were made by digital delay and guitar called 60 and 90 which I have but have not released. They are pretty much pure noise. Then I started 4 track recording on reel to reel which is where Film and Love come from. I started some others there are a few recordings from that era I have. One called Salty Dog I may be able to dig up. It’s hard to believe this is now 30 years old this month. Happy birthday Meat Flavoured Factor!

Ogre will be appearing at two upcoming horror conventions. This weekend, October 26th through 28th, he’ll be at Spooky Empire in Orlando, featuring a shadowcast showing of Repo! November 16th through 18th he’ll be at Chicago’s Days of the Dead. He’ll be signing autographs and will have some ohGr merch available. If you’re anywhere in the area of either of these shows, you owe it to yourself to go and have yourself the fantastic time that, let’s face it, you and I both know you sorely need. It’s been a while since we’ve heard straight from the horse’s mouth about the status of all of the various projects, so I thought I’d check in with cEvin and see what irons are on the proverbial fire. Here’s what he had to say:::

Right now we are working on a new Skinny Puppy album. I’m also working on several side projects, of course Download and PlaTEAU with Phil. I’m discussing new Tear Garden with Ed and band. Working on a kind of Sun Ra-ish style concept band that I’m going to induct a bunch of jazz buddies in on, like some of the boys from Volto if I can. This is halfway or more done. Download Furnace REDUX will see a rerelease since its been sold out for so long. This will be on Metropolis coming this fall. Following that will be PlatEAU’s Kushbush/ music for grassbars special edition rerelease as well as the Doubting Thomas Infidel special editon double CD. Working on a new module for the subcon synth eurorack side called the Vampire. This is in its 3rd prototype. So I’m hoping this will be reality sometime in 2013, as will a few other designs Ive been collaborating on with David Wright.

Mark Spybey of Download’s Dead Voices on Air will be performing as part of Providence, Rhode Island’s Halloween Industrial Festival, November 2nd through 4th, also featuring FM Einheit of Einstürzende Neubauten, Mark Hosler of Negativland, Otto Von Schirach, Controlled Bleeding and many others. It’s been a busy year for Mark, who has released a DVOA album, Mawson Will and Other Stories, for the Russian label Ewers Tonkunst, further entries in his series of collaborative 7”s via Tourette Records, and further releases via the DVOA bandcamp site. After several deadlines were missed by the manufacturer, as of September 11th, we were notified that the Skinny Puppy Vinyls should arrive next week, to begin shipping on or before September 25. We apologize for the delay. We met every deadline on our end and the vinyls were expected to be in house by early august.
